Meet Our Herd
As part of our nonprofit work, Hear the BRAY is home to a growing number of both domesticated donkeys and formerly wild burros in need of rehabilitation, training, and care.
While some will remain here as part of our forever herd, others will become available for adoption when they’re ready. Meet the herd and discover each of their stories below!
Maximus
Maximus is our stoic boy. One of four geldings we rescued from the BLM Delta Wild Horse and Burro Corral in Utah, he’s seen more life than he should have, and you can feel it in the way he carries himself.
As a sale authority burro estimated to be 21 years old, Maximus was deemed unlikely to be adopted by the BLM. After spending roughly 20 years as a wild jack in the Alamo herd management area of Arizona, Maximus was captured and brought to the Delta holding facility where he waited over a year for us to find him.
Behind his scars is a heart that desperately wants to be loved, he’s just not quite ready to let down his walls yet. We’ll wait. We’ll earn his trust and remind him that he is safe and loved, one day at a time.
Following rehabilitation, we hope to find Maximus a loving adoptive home one day!
Henry
Henry our shy, majestic gentleman. He was rescued along with Maximus from the Delta Wild Horse and Burro Corral in Utah as a sale authority BLM burro, and the two of them are starting to bond together!
Estimated at 10 years old, Henry was captured from the Centennial HMA in California and transferred from the Ridgecrest holding facility to Delta shortly before we found him.
Henry’s somewhat floppy ears and lopsided lip tell the story of his decade spent in the wild. He’s never in a hurry and doesn’t feel the need to be the center of attention. He stands back, watches, thinks things through, and takes his time with everything. But there’s something special about Henry, and we know when he’s ready to come out of his shell, he’s going to be something truly amazing!
Follow Henry’s journey with us as he will likely be available for adoption in the future!
Drago
Drago is our resident goofball! He earned his name from his unique NLP (no light points) coloring, which causes the pale markings typically seen on a donkey’s muzzle, belly, and around the eyes to appear dark instead. Donkeys with this trait are often known as “dragons”.
After roughly 5 years in the wild, Drago was rounded up from the Chemehuevi HMA in California before we found him at the Delta Utah BLM holding facility.
Drago is curious, playful, and always seems to find a way to make us smile. He may not be the first one through the door, but once he decides it’s safe, he’s right there with you.
We hope to one day find Drago an amazing adoptive home when he has completed his training and rehabilitation!
Boone
Boone, aka “Boone Baby” is simply one of the sweetest, softest souls you could ever meet. There’s something about him that just melts your heart. He has such a gentle spirit, and being around him feels like getting a piece of peace.
The youngest BLM gelding of our herd, he’s estimated to be about 4 years old, and was captured at the same time as Drago from the Chemehuevi HMA. It makes sense that Boone and Drago have become fast friends and can be seen spending a lot of time side by side.
Boone is quickly becoming the most outgoing member of our herd, encouraging the others to trust. He’s proof that sometimes the softest hearts leave the biggest hoofprints!
Char & Stella
Char & Stella are a mama and baby pair of jennies that came to us because their former owner was going through some difficult times and made the heartbreaking decision to rehome them so they could get the care they deserve. Like many people, she loved these girls dearly, and they loved her, but she wasn’t familiar with donkey behavior or how to build trust. Because of that, Char and Stella never really learned that human touch could be something safe and enjoyable!
The mama of the herd, Char is always keeping an eye on Stella and making sure everyone is where they’re supposed to be. She has that quiet, protective energy that says “I’ve got this”.
And then there’s Stella. Make no mistake, Stella is the boss! She runs this herd with confidence and absolutely knows her place in it. Every herd needs a leader, and Stella’s got the personality, presence, and just enough attitude to keep everyone in line!
Char & Stella will likely remain permanent members of our herd, receiving long term rehabilitation and helping encourage new members to build trust and rest easy under our loving care.
